I always got this impression, playing Animal Crossing, that the place was sort of like an endless summer vacation (even in the winter). I still had summer vacations when the game first came out, of course.
It's this secluded little place – being located entirely in a little box canyon valley thing sure helps – with a peaceful little town, no responsibilities, no pressure, money grows on trees, everyone's friendly, and you can basically do whatever you want. It's endless summer vacation. It's a summer camp with no adults.
Monstro Village is definitely based on that almost Animal Crossing aesthetic, that infinite peacefulness, that shut-off land with weird and friendly inhabitants everywhere.
