First off, I know that there is a perfectly good Dwarf Fortress thread on this board already, which has a number of helpful guides and info graphs posted. But that's not why I'm making this thread, its not a general thread. As always the hiatus is long and MLPG is upset, so I'd thought I'd try and organize a complicated and lengthy vidya project for us to get collectively frustrated over. You know, for fun!
>What is this exactly?
This is a succession/bloodline game of Dwarf Fortress. Chances are if you've heard of Dwarf Fortress, you've heard about the infamous legend of Boatmurdered, a succession game that was done on the Something Awful forums once upon a time. I want to organize a game like that for here.
>What is a succession/bloodline game?
Essentially it works like this: One of us starts a new game in fortress mode and play the game as we see fit. We continue this way until a set amount of time (in this case one in game year, or when Spring Has Arrived!). Once that happens we drop everything no matter what, save and quit, take the save game file and send it to the next person. We continue like this until the fort is inevitably destroyed or until this whole thing just falls apart or gets no interest. Which ever.
As we do, we take various screen shots of notable events or people or projects or simply things you want to point out and post them here with your commentary. You can be humorous or serious or do it in a journal style, however. Just be engaging and have fun.
>What do I do if I want to participate?
The game is open for all of MLPG. Simply post here expressing your want to be in this and I'll put you on the list. However keep in mind that this thing is going to be screwy on its own, so if you are completely new to Dwarf Fortress this is not exactly the best way for you to start learn.
Oh and for simplicity's sake, post with a name. More then one anon will just get confusing.
>What you will I need?
If you don't already, you'll want to download the latest version of Dwarf Fortress (0.34.11). Compatibility will be key here so everyone will need the same version. Besides that you'll need to know how take screen shots of your game and also how to pretty them up in a separate program, if you want to do that. Dwarf Therapist is also recommended, but not strictly needed.
>How will we be sending/receiving each other our save files?
We'll work that out based on what's easiest for everyone, probably being either email or drop box or some other easy free file sharing application.
>How long will I have to play/post my stuff/until I need to end my turn and send my save?
We'll work that out once I get an idea of how many people/how much enthusiasm there is for this. At the moment I'm thinking giving everyone about a one week deadline, but that's subject to change, especially as things progress or there's issues. We'll see.

>Why aren't we using the pony mod?
I'm well aware there is a My Little Pony mod for Dwarf Fortress, but I'm avoiding it here. Why? One, seeing as this game involves importing and exporting save files, the last thing we need is some compatibility issue cropping up that no one can figure out because of using other party add-on's. And two…..we'll I just plain don't like it. I like the show and everything, but not everything needs some pony gimmick. And it doesn't really make a lot of sense for ponies to be living inside a mined out mountain anyway.
>Can I at least name the dwarfs?
Yes, and you are encouraged to do so. Just don't rename any dwarfs that a previous player has already named.
>When will sign up be open?
I'm keeping a tentative deadline set for 5th of May, a little over a week from now, though this is subject to change.
>I have other questions!
By all means if anyone has any additional questions, comments or simply want to call me names this thread is for that and I'll get around to answering them within a day or two.
>tl;dr
Want to play MLPG Boatmurdered? Post here.

I'd play the fuck out of this.

Or play 2 years/leader until we get more people.

I could start up a normal fort now and post logs of it to draw some attention, shall I?
If you want, I could even make a megaproject or something to spice it up.

>>469No need to do anything just yet. Even if were were to start today this thing will still take a while to come about. That's sort of the point.
May 5th is the deadline even if no one else shows up

And once again the sub has surfaced. Now that the technical complications are out of the way, lets move on to the technical complications.
Papa Nurgle, as the only person (aside from the other guy on the temp site who's name escapes me but is still welcome to join if he chimes in) here, what would be easiest for you in terms of sending/receiving save files? We can try email, though I doubt the data limits will be tolerable, or we can try Dropbox, which I hardly have a grasp on but will learn if need be.
Also is one full week a good set time for you to run your turn? You can post all your stuff then or when the next person is playing.
And speakign of posting the stuff, I've accumulated some of my own already and ready to start posting, though I'm not all done yet. I'm going to start posting them in this thread soon-ish, but feel free to continue discussion or meta talk.
No.491
>>490Dropbox is fine by me.
Honestly, I could do my turn in an hour if it went smoothly, but I'd like to take more time. A week's a bit much for one whole year, but several days would be great in case of delays.
No.492
>>491Ok lets make it three days then. Sound good? A good turn over is nice, but I dont want anyone to feel rushed
Also I'll start posting my run tonight and continue to do so in sporadic updates as I go through my year.

Nothing seems to slow Spike down and quickly a massive meeting hall in dug out deep in the mountain, though still a respectable distance from the burning heart of the volcano. Now everyone has place to hang out and kick back, away from that nasty sun and kakapos.
>>520Wonderful. Once I finish off my year I'll start getting drop box in order/rounding up contact info to get things under way. Nurgle's up first and I'm only going part way tonight, so just sit tight for now.

1 - the stairs leading to the entrance topside at level 1
2- the stairs leading to the fort in level 0
3 - The bulk stockpile warehouse that houses everything until dedicated stockpiles can be set up
4 - raw plants for the kitchen and brewing above
5 - raw meats
6 - the armory for the barracks just above
7 - the underside of where the well will go
8 - the channeled area for where fishing can be done.
And that's everything! I am officially done for now and moving things over for Nurgle. I'm still figuring out Dropbox, but if I did things correctly I do believe this link will give you the copy of the save file. It should be a simple matter of replacing your game's save folder with this one. I would recommend making a copy, just in case.
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/1722zla0womh3jp/Bjkx_4G018I'm giving you a week to get your turn done, though if you finish sooner or need more time it shouldn't be a problem.
Have fun!

>Waywardrelic Overseer's Log, 12th Granite, 659
Ah, what wonders! The mountainhome's given me control of a small fortress outpost, whose previous overseer seems to have resigned.
The first things I noticed were the average signs of a young fort; lack of a well, lack of metalworks, lack of food, lack of nobles…
Those have all been righted. Well, maybe not the food one, since we can't be sure until our new bookkeeper gives us how much we really have.
Early on, I found Art-Anon ignoring his furnace operating duties in favor of fishing; Fishing in the empty swamps.
Beyond that, I ordered Craftsdwarf Rarity to construct food and drink storage in the form of rock pots; the concept of making something so simple and bland seemed to upset her, but I do hope she'll get it done.

Summer's gone past quickly.
The season started with a fishery worker going into a blind, screaming fury, producing an odd, but quite well made amulet.
Our first mayor was elected, and he was given quarters. He doesn't like us getting rid of medical supplies.
More immigrants showed up, as always.
An exploratory shaft, looking for ore, has uncovered a massive cavern deep in the earth. I'll have to send some miners and soldiers to give it a closer look.
Moron, Son of Boron, vanished one night, slain in the dining room, of all places! His blood was all missing, too. The priests suggest that we've a cursed dwarf among the populace.
Finally, a human caravan has appeared, and we've given them all of the gnomeblight we 'acquired' from the Elves. Hope they deal with that gnome problem.
