>>843265The atmosphere that comes to mind is a very competitive, yet orderly society. One of the most defining things in ancient China was the Imperial Exam, which effectively meant even a peasant child could become a high-ranking member of the Emperor's court if they scored well, although usually rich kids who had families who paid for extra classes would get the jobs. This competitiveness I think would contributed to the sheer amount of superstitions governing good and bad luck in Chinese culture. Pretty much everything is auspicious or not in different ways.
Because of civilization being centered around the Yellow River, there's a lot of mythology around water. In fact one of the legendary ancient emperors was known for inventing dams. Easter dragons are also much more associated with water, since they live in rivers and bring rain. Maybe there's a unique upper caste of Drakin who surround themselves with stormclouds.
You'd probably have historical figures that end up being deified, too, like the Yellow Emperor and Flame Emperors, who between them invented pretty much everything needed for civilization. People of great caliber might be believed to be reincarnations of legendary figures who attained some kind of spiritual perfection. There's a lot of emphasis also on trying to extend your life and/or gaining spiritual power through self-cultivation. Even some animals do it, because they want to eventually become human.
Some things you could look at are Ji Gong, a monk who basically said fuck abstinence while going around fighting evil, or the Eight Immortals, a bunch of people who managed to attain immortality and spend their time partying whenever they're not doing anything important. Oh yeah, eight and one hundred and eight are sacred, powerful numbers.
A story that ties together a lot of things quite nicely is Madam White Snake, you could just see what it's like in Wikipedia.

But yeah, as for monsters, what with the fear of death and emphasis on life, zombies are a big thing. Jiangshi are zombies that have to jump around because their legs don't move properly because of Rigor mortis, then they try to suck life energy out of people. Here are some being subdued by talismans. You could probably have fancy words written by powerful mystics onto paper as powerful artifacts.
Demons are called yao guai, and they range from grotesque beast/human crossbreeds to outright being shapeshifting spirits.
One of the stories that incorporates a lot of this is Investiture of the gods, I recall there being a comic version somewhere

The only sort of backstory deal I had any kind of real ideas on until now was about the dragon emperor himself, but these provide tons of new food for thought.
long ago a human king sent out his army to kill a dragon, fearing it would attack his lands. The general, a proud drakin, challenged the beast in its lair, yet could not kill it. Three days later he returned to his men, without his sword. He said he had spent these days not only fighting, but speaking with the beast. He had seen the dragon was not only stronger than he was, but wiser as well. So he chose to stay with the dragon.
Angered by this failure, the king sent his advisor, a brilliant philosopher with a silver tongue and sharp mind, to prove the dragon was no match for a true mind. Six days they debated before the advisor reruned, stating that he too would stay with the wise dragon, having left his staff behind.
Infuriated, the king himself rode to the dragon's lair and entered as the sun rose. As the sun set that same day, the king returned without his crown. He too had seen the truth in the dragon's wisdom, and left to spread word of it to every corner of the land.
And as word spread and more arrived to hear from the wise dragon, a village was built to house these pilgrims. The village grew into a city, and the lair into a palace. There the dragon emperor still sits to this day, having grown only wiser with the centuries. No.843290
>>843286Interesting.
If he's such a cool guy, you could have him being outright challenged by demons who want to take him down. Shapeshifting demons who try to corrupt him or his court.
One of the most prevalent legends that also ties into the creation of many gods in the pantheon is a guy called King Zhou of Shang. Supposedly, he was once a good king until he got too obsessed with orgies with his concubines, he was infamous for having a 'Wine Pool and Meat Grove', which is exactly what it sounds like and probably the most famous example of corruption. Legend has it that it was one of his concubines, Daji, who turned him, and she was also an evil fox spirit who helped him recruit an army of demons so no one could rebel.
Jiang Jiya, a lesser noble, would eventually lead in his overthrow by rallying rival kingdoms. Legend has it now that he rallied a whole army of newly-born gods to defeat the demon army and eventually became one himself. A few of them were children who were born as freaks and abandoned by their families, but taken in by sages who helped them realise their power. One of them is Nezha, who had to seppuku to save his family from suffering for his crimes and was given a lotus root body for a second chance at life. Erlang sheng was a guy had a third eye that he eventually learned to use to see truths and shoot lasers out of. After the overthrow, the Zhou Dynasty (not related to King Zhou before) would rule and invoke the Mandate of Heaven, basically whoever gets to rule is chosen by the gods and if the previous guy got overthrown then it's because their license got revoked.
Oh yeah, and only after this dynasty did the Empire of unified China actually form, the Qin Dynasty under Qin Shi Huang. Unified a ton of things and put down a stable political system, but only lasted a short while because Qin Shihuang was obsessed with immortality and thought mercury was an elixir of life and ended up poisoning himself. The terracotta was made by his rule, and his tomb has so much fucking mercury it's poisoned the land around it. They haven't opened the tomb yet because they're afraid technology isn't enough to study and preserve it properly yet, but according to legend it has a hundred rivers of mercury to simulate the land and pearls inset into the ceiling to mimic the night sky.>>843288It's pretty cool

>>843430Hmm, how to put it? Let me try to dispel some of the mystique for you
Is it "London, but with tons of cutebois and a wolfgirl"? Yes, but there's a lot more plot than you probably expect. Seriously, Neeps and DM have been faffing for like 5,000 words just sitting around drinking and chatting, about life and their stories and stuff! Two characters are very pure priests, too. No joke, really.
You wanna pick out individual characters, I mean it should be no surprise. At the end of the day, DM willingly decides not to go be lewd in bed and instead wants to go up to the rooftops to reflect on philosophy and government. Maali gets more excited about going out to exorcisms and cleaning up haunted houses Scooby-doo style than he does about any cuteboi encounters of the totally-no-homo variety.
Literally just today Nopo told me that there was this scene (which was in a bathtub, but it was platonic) where he said it wasn't really anything sexual for him but he enjoyed it because it was cute and it had a lot of impactful, story-driven character development that really made the plot engaging. And I don't mean to brag but I'm really happy with how some of DM and Groves's stuff turned out too, how the plot is all sliding together perfectly.
This may be a shocker but even Nasso has some pretty deep character stuff going on. His character is this kind of NEET kid without much talent who lives with his master and she just totally disrespects him and treats him like garbage because he never amounted to anything. But he goes out into the world and wins her respect by helping the police on this investigation into the Talisman, and now he's kind of coming-of-age and blossoming into a man.
>What about the plot itself? There once was a powerful magic talisman in Timbuktu
Songhai raiders stole it from them
East India company stole it from them
Crown Royalists stole it from them
Montferrat the Frenchman stole it from them
Now the PCs gotta get it back!
It's like musical chairs!

>>843465They were a religious Fallen Empire, so they had psionic soldiers and jump drives. They didn't do much except box me in for most of the game, but when they Awakened, they decided to declare war on the Jurinn (red empire below me) and the other FE. Granted, it was a fight they could have won, since they severely outgunned the Jurinn and it's Federation, and they could outlast the other FE since Awakened Empires keep producing more ships, while stagnant empires don't, and thus could get whittled down. Unfortunately for them, the Draconian Clans have been preparing for this for centuries, and like hell were they going to pass up an opportunity like that.
This Admiral of mine is going to go down in the Draconian history books for sure. First he takes out the Ether Drake (losing only one destroyer in the process), then goes on to take down the Stellarite Devourer, a literal Star-eater, with no casualties whatsoever, and now he's led the fleet to victory against the Empire that's threatened them since they first took to the stars, and is likely going to lead the fleets to victory against the other Empire as well. All with hardly any losses at all.

>just realized their empire is named "Vool Fanatics">From now on in the Draconian Clans, whenever somebody does or is going to do something stupid or dangerous, more sensible bystanders will chastise them by yelling "You Vools!"Now, for the general state of the rest of the galaxy:
Yellow circle is my capital, and where I started out. This is to give a frame of reference for how the two FEs boxed me in.
Speaking of, the FE's are circled in Red. The only one left, the one on the bottom, is a bunch of Xenophobic birds who first introduced themselves by demanding we destroy a Frontier Outpost we'd just built and slapped us with a "Humiliated" debuff for ten years, not to mention how so many of the good planets I'd been gunning for were stuck inside their aggro-zone. I've been stepping lightly around them this entire game, but that's going to change now that I know I can beat them.
The Light-blue empires are my two Rivals- the one up top is the weaker, but more immediate concern. They're also the ones who complained when we held military drills and maneuvers near our borders with them, to which we flipped them the bird. The Zurn League is a bunch of religious zealots who've expanded by conquering others… including a race of bird-people who the Draconians were on very good terms with. In fact, they were some of our first friends. We haven't forgotten them, and while we can't make them self-ruling again, we can liberate them and make them part of our empire.
The empires circled in brown, the Jurinn and Protecian, have formed a Federation together, and even invited the Draconians to become members (it was declined because the Draconians prefer being strong on their own, but it shows that our empires are on pretty good terms.) The Jurinn are visually identical to the Draconians, and it's not to far-fetched to think they might be offshoots from a failed colonization or something. However, they're Slaving Despots, so they've taken the ideas of ownership too far.
The little purple circles are my two Vassals, both empires that got stomped on by the other empires. They submit to Draconian rule, and we keep them safe.

Still relatively light losses- four cruisers isn't many when the fleet has eighty, and the corvettes and destroyers fared similarly- but still noteworthy, as previous foes would be lucky to take out two or three enemies.
There was an empire of Honorbound Warriors who had the misfortune of spawning below them; I'm pretty sure they were constantly getting bullied by the FE, since any attempts they made to expand would have prompted the FE to tell them to destroy it. So yeah, the Birbs were total assholes, and nobody's going to miss them.
